The Ferdinand fund
Ferdinand was an incredible horse who led an astonishing life until 2002 when he was slaughtered for meat in Japan. Ferdinand held titles such as The 1987 Horse of the Year, the 1986 Kentucky Derby winner, and the 1987 Breeders' Cup Classic winner. Despite his tremendous accomplishments, Ferdinand's grim fate would shock the world. His loss would begin a powerful movement in the racing industry that, to this day, is continuously felt. Tragedy brought awareness; We honor Ferdinand, and the many equine lives saved because of his sacrifice.
What happens after the derby?
We ask this question because of Ferdinand's story. Although this beautiful horse lives on in history, we consider him one of our Derby Darlings. As a dedication, we created The Ferdinand Fund. This biannual scholarship is open to all equine organizations with the mission of removing horses from kill pens.
Submissions will begin in January 2025.
